NIGGA & NIGGER

What does that word mean? The first person I would want to ask is someone of age such as my grandmother or great relative. Out of respect, I would want to know how they feel about that word and what it means to them. That’s a start. Let’s say you don’t want to go that route and you prefer to agree with the census. The census says it’s a term of endearment. So, I decided to break out the dictionary. I chose the urban dictionary because it’s only befitting to try and reason with those who disagree with me. My belief is its derogatory. I can always be objective and open my eyes to another’s point of view. That’s why I started this blog. Anyways… I’m getting off track here. I decided to pull the urban dictionary since it seems to be the most important resource to use. The urban dictionary says that “nigga is a word which evolved from the derogatory term “nigger””. Yes. This is quoted from the URBAN dictionary. Not the Webster. So I’m sure now some will say even the urban dictionary got it wrong. That’s fine too. Allow me to go a little bit further… The urban dictionary goes on to say that “a nigger is a BLACK man with a slavery chain around his neck. And a nigga is a BLACK MAN with a gold chain around his neck.” I wouldn’t be too proud of being called either if we go by these definitions. It was said that Tupac defined the word. I’ll give another example. The word bitch is also used by females as a term of endearment. Ok. So… I went BACK to the urban dictionary and neither definition says ANYTHING about being a pleasant word. So it appears to me that it should be understood. You can’t call me up bitch as a friend and then use the same word out of hate to refer to me. That’s some weird shit to me. Has that word been embraced because men call women that? If you think about it, the word nigger was and is a derogatory word used in slave days and still used today to demean a black person by another race. We supposedly made it a positive out of negative? (As I scratch my head) Did we do the same for the term bitch? Men have referred to us as bitches for a while now and they definitely meant it or mean it to degrade us. Did women decide to embrace that? Ok. You get my point. I hope. Back to the word at hand, nigga. I think it’s horrible, black people are the only people that defends the use of a word that is demeaning. You will never find Mexicans, Jews, etc. embracing a term that undermines their worth. Why do we?
